The island of Thimarafushi is an ideal island for surfers, located in the centre of the Maldives, 221 kilometres south of Male, the nation's capital. The region has become increasingly popular as surfers seek to escape the crowds in the north. When it comes to surfing in the Central Maldives, you can't beat the island of Thimarafushi, with world-class waves and a good mix of both left and right-handed waves to choose from. All the surf spots are a short boat ride away from the island and are close to each other, so you can change spots within minutes.

The main atolls that are referred to as the Central Atolls are Meemu, Dhaalu, Thaa and Laamu, and are mostly good for fun while offering endless, high-performance waves. An advantage of the Central Atolls is the accessibility of the breaks, which are exposed to the widest range of wave directions, from south-west to south-east. The best waves are found on the reefs next to the channel where the water enters and leaves the atoll lagoon. Wave direction, tide and wind direction determine the best spot for the day. Most of the best breaks in the Central Atolls are right-handed, but there are also many good lefts.
